Il Mercato Wedding Photographer
Il Mercato sits on Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District, a few blocks off the tourist track, across from Sophie Wright Park.
The architecture is Spanish. Grand arches with ivy running over them, herringbone floors inside, Italianate chandeliers overhead. That style does something special to the pictures. Warm light, hard shadows through the archways, a European feel that doesn't look like anywhere else in the city.
It's also big. La Sala opens up enough to hold a large wedding without the day feeling packed in, which is harder to find here than you'd expect.
THE COURTYARD
An outdoor fireplace anchors one end, and it's the backdrop most couples end up standing in front of for the ceremony. Ivy-clad archways around the perimeter. Park greenery over the wall.
The sunsets in there are worth building the timeline around.
THE LIBRARY
The library is the best thing in the building that nobody plans for.
It sits off the main space, so it works as an escape from the party. Somewhere to put the groom's cake. Somewhere conversations actually happen, which makes it where I find the pictures that aren't of the wedding.
HOW THE DAY RUNS HERE
There's no getting-ready space at Il Mercato. You arrive dressed, but there is a bridal room.
That isn't a drawback, it just shapes the timeline. The morning happens at your hotel, and by the time you're through the gate the day is already moving. It also makes this a strong venue for a first look, because you walk in ready to be photographed.
THE SECOND LINE
This is where the neighborhood pays off. The backdrops lean hard into New Orleans without being in the French Quarter.
You get the city in the frame. You don't get the crowd.
